In psychological counseling work, people often encounter such troubles: What is the work for?
The work is worthless, not recognized by the leaders and colleagues, and the relationship with colleagues is different. The reasons are different, and everyone feels painful.
However, I hope you all think about it first. What do people originally work for?
Some people may say “to do what you want to do” while others say “to realize your dreams.”
I think these answers are correct. However, in essence, people work for life. This truth has not changed forever.
To support myself and to work to support my family, I think this is the primary purpose of work. In my opinion, working for money is not a shameful thing, it is a matter of course, I think it is very remarkable.
How much money you earn is not that important. If you can support yourself and your family’s daily life, it will be enough. Life is just like this.
When I first started working as a doctor, I didn’t think about “saving the dying and healing the wounded and helping others for pleasure”, but just “following the trend”.
In June 1945, when I was 16 years old, I went to Osaka from Hiroshima Onomichi. There are 5 children in our family and my father is an ordinary elementary school teacher. My parents love my two younger brothers. They often tell me “After graduating from a girls’ school, you should either be a teacher or marry, and you can support yourself as soon as possible”. I have no other choice. For rural families with more children, these words can’t be more common.
In this case, I had to come out to work earlier.
At that time, the uncle who was opening a clinic in Osaka said: “If anyone wants to be a doctor, I can subsidize all his tuition.”
Therefore, I decided to become a doctor. There is no such thing as happiness or unhappiness in this choice, and it does not matter whether I want to do it or not. I had no choice but to study medicine and then work.
By the way, I did not open a clinic by myself. For nearly 70 years in medicine, I have always been an employed doctor, equivalent to an office worker.
I have no ambitions, and I work to earn money to raise children. Now the children are already independent, and I am getting older, and I no longer have to make money to feed them. But facing patients who trust me, I have to continue working. It has been 70 years since we have been in such a hot and cold exchange.
To put it nicely, let’s let life go with the flow. Isn’t it good to have this attitude towards work?
Nowadays, it is easy for us to see some disturbing news, and the resulting inner anxiety and dissatisfaction can make people feel bad. The unforeseen future can also make people feel uneasy. The world is changing rapidly, as it is in any era. This is something we can’t do, especially in the face of political and economic issues. In the face of life, we must convince ourselves that we must take good care of ourselves and protect our family.
When you are confused by the question of “what do you work for?”, you might as well tell yourself simply and decisively that work is just to make money to support yourself. This is the fundamental reason why people want to work.
As for “life value” and “self-growth”, it is a question that you have to think about slowly in your spare time after you have a firm foothold. Life is long, just think slowly.
If you are able to support yourself, work very well, and have no needs to meet, you can try to consider what ideas are still unfulfilled.
In short, working to live is nothing shameful.
