The past and present of the flight suit

Flight suits are the exclusive equipment of Air Force pilots. When pilots fly in the sky to fight, flight suits can effectively protect the personal safety of pilots under extreme conditions such as high altitude, low pressure, low temperature, and lack of oxygen, which is an important guarantee for pilots to complete their tasks. Therefore, don’t look at the flight suit as a set of clothes, it is also an indispensable weapon for fighting!

“Help” flight suit
Speaking of the history of the development of flight suits, it must be traced back to World War I. Interestingly, the first time the pilot was captured was related to the flight suit. At that time, Italy and Turkey were at war. Italy sent nine aircraft to perform its mission. One of the aircraft was hit by Turkish ground artillery and the pilot was captured. The pilot complained grievously when he was questioned: “My clothes are too thin, they are freezing to death in the plane, my hands are frozen and I can’t do the lifting operation.” This may be the first time in the history of aviation and flying Service related issues.

With people’s deeper understanding of combat aircraft, when a series of problems such as low-altitude flight and pilots’ fear of cold have been solved, flight suits need to solve the problems of high altitude and low pressure, and insufficient oxygen supply. Coercion was born in the United Kingdom.

The first person to try on was the American Bester. He wore this flight suit from London to Melbourne and participated in the flight competition. But less than 10 minutes after the flight began, the flight suit broke. Soon after, Bost spent another US$75 (about 520 yuan) on a parachute canvas to make a specially-sealed piece of clothing, but he just tried it in the decompression room and the clothes broke.

A month later, Bost once again improved the clothes. This time, he made the clothes into two layers. The inner layer was made of thick rubber bags, which inflated and put pressure on the human body, while the outer layer used canvas. . This time it was successful. Boster wore this special flight suit and made a circle in the sky, which perfectly solved the problem of body pressure. As a result, the first real flight suit in human history was born in August 1934.

In the early 1960s, the Chinese Air Force began to develop and equip high-altitude compensation suits and anti-charge suits. Later, after collective research by researchers, they developed ventilated suits. In 1982, the liquid cooling suit was developed, and the military equipment was updated. I believe that with the progress of the times and technology, both the technological content and safety performance of flight suits will achieve leapfrog development.

Goggles in flight suit
Do you think the flight suit is just a set of ordinary clothes? This is wrong. The flight suit is not just a top and a pair of pants, but a series of matching combinations. In addition to the top and pants, it also includes goggles, leather boots, gloves, helmets, scarves, sweaters, sweaters and shirts, etc. The same can’t be less. For example, we often see pilots wearing sunglasses with helmets when they go to heaven on TV. They are very handsome. In fact, these sunglasses are called goggles.

When the sky was too high, the pilot’s eyes could not bear it at first, and the goggles could block the airflow. Later, some pilots felt very sick after going to the sky. After research, it was found that this was caused by eye discomfort caused by the reflection of high-altitude sunlight through clouds and other factors. Wearing dark goggles solved this problem well.

Why the flight suit has no buttons
Everyone may have noticed that flight suits are mostly one-piece jackets with no buttons on them. Generally, a zipper is directly pulled to the top. This is unreasonable from the perspective of daily clothes design. So why doesn’t the flight suit have buttons? This is a painful lesson.

In March 1951, a country in Western Europe held a land-air comprehensive exercise. An ace pilot of the country flew into the blue sky and performed a simulated bombing drill. However, shortly after he went to heaven, a distress signal was issued, and then the aircraft broke down in the air and shook violently. In the end, the pilot crashed with the plane and killed the plane. Afterwards, the country conducted an investigation into the flight accident and found that a button on the pilot’s flight suit fell into the precision instrument on the aircraft, causing the aircraft equipment to malfunction and causing tragedy.

Later, people continued to learn the lessons of flight accidents, and found that similar things have happened in other countries. Some countries also suffered from fat flight suit cuffs and cuffs, which were hung on switches or parts in narrow flight cabins, which almost caused accidents. Case. In order to eliminate hidden dangers, all countries have improved flight suits, replacing the original buttons with nylon zippers, and designing cuffs and waistbands as jackets with waists, which has well eliminated hidden dangers and made pilots safer after going to heaven.
