Help children find “sweet spots”

In the past two years, my son’s academic performance has improved a lot, and he has gradually entered the top ten of the grade. Many parents asked me what my secret was. If you think about it, a lot of my secrets come from life.

My son has never been interested in English, and I have thought of many ways before, with little success. One day, a friend brought me a set of skin care products from Europe. The instructions are all in English. I had to move out of the Oxford dictionary to check them one by one. I didn’t check a few, and had to do housework again, I asked my son to help me follow up. When I came out from the kitchen for more than an hour, and found that my son was still intensively translating, he sat down and studied with him. Two hours later, we finally translated a rough idea.

The next day, after school, his son took out that set of skin care products and said that we had errors in several translations yesterday. He specifically asked the English teacher. That evening, his English teacher called me and said that his son was very serious in English class today. He still checked the materials after class and asked her questions voluntarily. This was the first time since going to middle school.

This incident inspired me to learn how to indoctrinate for learning. My son is not interested, but if he takes life practice to learn, he is very serious. So, I decided to dig this channel.

I asked my friend to find some English manuals, such as skin care products, cars, machinery, etc., and I pretended to be very helpless to my son every few days: “Since last time I boasted in the unit, you translated it for me. After setting up the instructions for skin care products, my colleagues admire you. You see, this is Aunt Zhang asking you to help translate the usage of this kitchen appliance.” Not only did his son not refuse, he was also very happy and confidently invested Among them. In order to encourage him to “help others” spirit, I occasionally buy him some gifts, saying that the uncle and aunt gave him a reward.

His son’s interest in learning English has gradually been mobilized, and the effect of this translation training on improving English level is particularly obvious. It is no longer memorizing a few English words, but an overall understanding from the perspective of language. Persisting for a while, he not only improved the test scores, but also learned to apply, very meaningful.

Chinese practice is more convenient than English practice. Sometimes I watch TV with my son. I will deliberately lead him to pay attention to the lines; we will listen to the news during breakfast. I sometimes comment on the news headlines and ask him his ideas. Even if I walk on the road and see something written, I intentionally guide my children to pay attention. I often write various articles at work, sometimes I will deliberately say: “Son, you come to try, if you are engaged in my profession, will you be fired.”

Most children like to challenge. At the beginning, he did not dare to compliment what he wrote. I laughed at him: “You are at this level, the leader will not pay you a salary.” The son is not convinced, but will secretly work hard. Heaven asked me again: “Is there anything else I can help with writing?” In this way, it is difficult to improve the writing level if you are challenged again and again like playing a game. Moreover, in the process of finding materials and writing, he read a lot of text, and his reading level also improved.

His son’s father works in a construction company and often has to deal with a lot of specific calculations in mathematics and physics. His son’s uncle is engaged in biological research in a pharmaceutical factory and has a lot of dealings with chemistry. I deliberately asked my son to find them to practice.

To be honest, when I deliberately lead my son to these practices, I did not think it would give him a high score. I even doubted that I was doing this right, because the practice process is more cumbersome and will waste a lot of sons. study-time. But I also think that the ancients said that “learn to apply”, if you want your son to take the initiative to learn, first let him understand that he is not learning for parents and teachers, but because these knowledge are very real in real life Role and meaning. Probably because his son gradually realized this, he became very active in learning.

After all, how to arouse interest in children’s learning is the most critical. In kinematics, there is a concept called “sweet zone”, which means the best hitting position of the racket surface. Many people use this word to describe an area where someone is interested and good at it. I think there are “sweet spots” for children’s learning. We have to help them search and expand this “sweet spot”. Life-style learning may be a good channel.
