Encounter Amazonian Legion Ants

In the Amazon tropical rain forests of South America, there is a carnivorous ant called Legion Ants. This kind of ant appeared on the earth as early as 100 million years ago, and its origin is similar to that of dinosaurs, which is of great research value. However, this kind of ants like to form an army of more than one million to live a safaris life, wherever they go, “who meets and destroys”, destroying all animals that can be caught by them or dare to fight against them.
Chinese zoologist Su Yi was once invited to the Amazon tropical rain forest in South America to conduct field investigations and research, where he encountered a legionary mosquito army. He conducted thrilling observations and researches on this terrifying social animal on the line of life and death…
Encountered the Legion Ants “Who meets who kills”
In 1992, Su Yi came to the South American continent to study the ecology of the deep forests of French Guiana Station, I want to observe and study various animals and plants living in the vast Amazon rainforest.
After more than 10 days of travel, Su Yi, a foreign female researcher and two indigenous people moved away from their research station “base camp” and came to a relatively wide area in the rainforest, where the trees are tall and straight, with almost no branches. , So everyone can see far away.
Suddenly, an aboriginal person walking in the front screamed in horror: “No, we met Legion ants!” Everyone clearly saw through high-powered binoculars that a dense army of ants that could not see the end lay horizontally. With a width of at least 1 km, it drove in this direction mightily. Both natives said that this legionary ant army had at least 1 million. And Su Yi and the researcher had also heard of the horror of Legion Ants in the tropical rain forest before, and knew where they went “who meet and kill whom.”
Sure enough, with the arrival of legion ants, the rain forest became chaotic. Various birds and birds on the canopy flapped their wings into the air, screaming and flew away; the apes and other animals on the branches swung from this tree to that tree in a hurry, and ran away; The snakes, insects, pigs and leopards on the ground all escaped from their nests and desperately scattered to escape.
On the side of a big tree, there is an eagle’s nest made of dry branches. In the nest are two small eagles that can’t fly. Many legion ants crawled along the trunk to this eagle’s nest. The two big eagles seemed to be the parents of the little eagles. Seeing the legion ants invaded, they did not dare to stay on the tree and hovered sadly in the air, watching the legion ants sting their children. After a while, the Legion Ants spread out, leaving only the feathers and skeletons of two small eagles. Seeing this scene, Su Yi and his companions were very frightened, yelling “Run fast” at the same time, turning their heads back and running desperately towards the path. It was dark, and the female researcher couldn’t run anymore. She wanted to rest on the spot for one night and wait until she recovered her strength the next day. She felt that the crawling speed of legion ants could not be compared with the speed of human running. They must have been left far behind. Su Yi said no, so everyone flashed their flashlights and continued to withdraw.
At dawn, everyone suddenly discovered that the legionary ant army had already moved as far as they could see. Everyone’s scalp suddenly became numb again.
Observation and research on the line between life
two days later, Su Yi and his companions came to the front of a long creek several meters wide. After passing the creek, Su Yi didn’t want to “flee”. He had an unexpected idea: this creek is deep and the current is relatively rapid, it is a natural barrier to prevent the legion ants from advancing, it must be difficult for the legion ants to cross the creek. Why not wait for the Legion ants to come to the other side and observe them closely? Su Yitai wanted to seize this opportunity. Although several of his companions were afraid, they agreed to stay together. Several other companions who stayed in the “base camp” also rushed over when they got the news. What Su Yi and several researchers want to understand is why legion ants like to live and act in large-scale collectives such as hundreds of thousands or millions? How did their commanders mobilize the millions of troops?
The legion ant army finally reached the opposite bank of the creek. What everyone did not expect was that the legion ants stopped moving and seemed to set up camp on the opposite bank. For Su Yi and the others, this stream became a line of life and death. Su Yi clearly saw through the telescope that these Legion ants had very small eyes, most of the tails were red, their waists and heads were black, and their body length was only about 0.5 cm. There were also a few that had black upper jaws and six limbs. All are red.
Through observation, Su Yi and his companions determined that the legion ant army is the smallest, but the most numerous are the worker ants. They are all infertile females. They usually rely on them for expansion, aggression and fighting. Among them, they are larger, and there are a certain number of soldier ants. They should be the “gendarmes” for the legion ants to maintain order in the army. There are also a very small number of winged male ants. These should be male ants specially designed to mate with the queen ant, but once they mate with the queen ant, they will die soon.
But where is the king of ants? Su Yi and the others soon saw a unique scene: on a huge ancient tree, many worker ants began to hook up with each other with their limbs, one by one, until they reached the ground, forming countless ant chains. At the top of the ant chain, those male ants and soldier ants are clustering around a very large ant. This giant ant is the king of this army of ants. Soon, countless corps of ants climbed up along those ant chains, formed a huge ant nest hanging from the tree around the king, and then each found their own place to stay. Other legion ants have built countless ant chains on other trees or rocks, forming countless unique ant nests. In this way, temporary nests are built wherever they are opened, and are fixed like other ants. The lair is completely different. It seems that these days should be the “rest period” for Legion Ants.
The next morning, Su Yi and his companions saw that the soldier ants seemed to have been instructed by the king, and they used their antennae to communicate and pass orders with the workers who lived everywhere. Soon, a large number of worker ants completed the assembly and began to attack the surrounding area, as if to take some action. Under a large rock in the distance, there is a giant spider with a big mouth. This is one of the largest spiders in the world. Even snakes can be hunted. The giant spider just stabbed a mountain rat with the sharp hooks on its mouth and injected its venom. It waited for the mountain rat to break down into liquid before smoking. A legion ant spotted it and rushed up bravely. The giant spider stretched out its hook and cut it into two sections at once. Several Legion Ants discovered the giant spider. After fighting with the giant spider for a few rounds, they died one by one. The Legion Ants who followed saw this and hurriedly turned around to move reinforcements. Not long after, a large number of legion ants drove over. The giant spider was arrogant, and stayed there to slowly enjoy the mountain rat. To the legion ants who killed the ant, the giant spider was really insignificant, and soon , Together with the mountain rat that hasn’t been eaten by it, it becomes a plate of Chinese food for Legion Ants.
On this day, the Legion ants attacking everywhere hunted many animals. As long as they met, whether it was a wild boar or an ant, or even other ant species, they would all be swept away by them. Su Yi and his companions observed that at least tens of thousands of termites in the roots of a dead tree were slaughtered by the legionaries, and none of them survived. When the worker ants of the legion ant fight the enemy, the soldier ants of the legion ant will organize an attack or supervise the battle on one side. If the enemy is strong, the soldier ants will also join the battle, using their more powerful jaws and stinger on the tail to help the worker ants solve problems. Perhaps it was because it wasn’t during the march that after the Legion Ants wiped out other animals, they didn’t completely eat up their flesh and blood, but decomposed them and then carried them back.

In the next few days, Su Yi and his companions came to the conclusion that the Legion Ant King has the supreme authority. It only eats the honeydew squeezed out from its abdomen by the worker ants every day.
The “Ultimate Killer” is also worthy of respect. After
10 days, the Legion ant army on the other side of the stream seemed to have passed the “rest period” and was about to begin their expedition again. They brazenly formed a dense formation and drove to the bank of the creek, wanting to cross the creek. Although Su Yi’s companions were extremely frightened, they still didn’t quite believe that these legion ants could cross the torrential stream.
However, the Legion ants are not afraid, and they want to force the creek. I saw that many Legion ants hugged each other and quickly formed a big ant ball. Other Legion ants pushed behind, pushed the big ant ball to the shore, and then pushed into the stream.
After the big antballs fell into the stream, they floated on the water and rolled continuously with the current, trying to roll to the opposite bank, but the rushing water did not make them wish. On the contrary, the big ant ball was washed smaller and smaller by the water, and in the end, it was completely washed away and disappeared. The legion ants were unwilling to fail, and they formed a lot of large ant colonies, rolling into the stream one after another, you chased me, and rolled towards the opposite bank with all your strength. But the flowing water was merciless, and they were finally washed away one by one. Seeing that this method didn’t work, the legion ants stopped forcing them to cross, and all retreated back to the woods. Su Yi and his companions were relieved for the time being. Unexpectedly, it didn’t take long for them to be stunned: they saw a piece of wide dry leaves that would move, and they all moved slowly towards the stream. Upon closer inspection, it turned out that Legion ants were holding them underneath. Dry leaves are moving. After the dry leaves were consigned to the opposite shore, many legion ants climbed on it. Then, the other legion ants pushed the dry leaves that were “sit” full of legion ants into the stream.
Some “leaf boats” were overturned by running water, and the legion ants on them fell into the water, but many “leaf boats” successfully sent the legion ants to the shore. Thus, they were able to “land” in this way. Seeing the tenacious style of Legion Ants, Su Yi was deeply moved.
A legion ant moved very quickly, crawling on the feet of a zoologist, stinging him, and he let out a scream in pain. Everyone was frightened and retreated quickly.
More and more Legion ants landed ashore. A French companion of Su Yi once caught a cotton possum for research and put it in a small cage. When retreating, there was no time to take it away. Because the cage door is tightly closed, this cotton-haired possum has no way to escape. Quite a few legion ants crawled into the small cage, and this cotton possum was eaten all by the legion ants instantly, leaving only a skeleton.
After running away, Su Yi and his companions were still in shock. They observed the Legion Ants with binoculars, and saw that they had come a lot. Su Yi believed that the Legion Ants used the “leaf boat” method to transport troops, and most of the Legion Ants could be transported. They are all transported over, even if a part of them is lost, they can be hatched by the king ant eggs, and soon hundreds of thousands of new members of the army ant army will be added.
If you retreat further, you will soon reach the “base camp”. Su Yi and his companions understand that even if they keep retreating, there will not necessarily be a stream to stop the Legion ant army, and even if there is a stream, the facts have proved that, It is impossible to expect the stream to stop the legion ants from advancing. If this continues, if everyone is tired and can’t run, they will be “annihilated” by this army of ants.
That afternoon, in their high-powered telescope, another animal that seemed to them very powerful was swallowed by the legionary ant army. It was a jaguar, maybe because the jaguar was old, or because it was sick, it was surrounded by legion ants, and its body was covered with small legion ants. After a short time, another animal’s skeleton appeared on the ground.
In the face of unprecedented danger, if everyone allowed the Legion ants to “chase and kill” in this way, the fear in their hearts would be enough for everyone to bear. As a result, everyone decided to call for the helicopter to come to rescue. Through the contact with the radar transmitter, two small helicopters finally arrived in time, allowing them to “escape in victory”.
This thrilling visit to the Amazon tropical rain forest made Su Yi feel the law of the strong eating of the weak in nature. Although the legionary ant seems to be too “bad” in people’s impression, since this species exists, it has its rationality. Most of the animals hunted by legion ants are old, weak, sick and disabled. As far as nature is concerned, from the point of view of ecology and species science, Legionnaires and predators are dependent on each other and are inseparable from each other. Legionnaires hunt for survival, and predators also need to be eliminated. Only in this way can Legionnaires survive the old, weak, and disabled in their colony, and their predators can maintain a good population. Therefore, for legion ants, humans should also respect their lives, because they are also an important part of maintaining the original balance of the tropical rain forest.
