How powerful is the 32:9 49-inch display Philips 499P9H1

It’s no accident that when I finally tried to move this Philips 499P9H1 monitor to my desk, it immediately caught the attention of everyone in the office – it’s too big and completely out of anyone’s Imagine. Anyone with normal curiosity will definitely want to sit down and experience this monster. Then the problem is obvious. What is the experience of such a huge display? Value is not worth the blood purchase? Is it really the same as you think? Next, I will come and share my feelings about using this time. As a veteran player for more than a decade, I have seen the display step by step from 4:3, which is close to the rectangle, to 16:10, then 16:9, to 21:9 with the fish screen. Every change brings me a considerable degree of visual shock, but frankly, all these changes add up to less than the visual shock that the 499P9H1 brings to me. This guy’s 32:9 screen ratio is really exaggerated. The width of the 49-inch 499P9H1 even reached an extremely exaggerated 1.194 meters. You know, my two-and-a-half-year-old son is only 0.9 meters tall. Sitting in this huge “banner” (I think this adjective is too apt to be appropriate), you will find it impossible to look at it at first glance. Of course, if you can really look at the whole face without twisting your neck, then I suggest that you must go to the eye exam – this means that you are likely to suffer from the disease of exotropia.

In order to create an immersive visual experience, the surface has become the standard for displays starting at a screen ratio of 21:9. For a screen ratio of 32:9, the surround feel of the curved screen is more obvious. The curvature of the 1800R bends the 499P9H1 into a distinct arc that envelops the human eye. Compared with the traditional flat panel display, the 499P9H1 is a large-size curved screen that is closer to the human eye’s perception in real life, reducing image distortion and having a strong immersive visual experience. Of course, it is precisely because of the characteristics of the curved screen that it cannot correctly display a straight line on the screen. Therefore, if you are engaged in professional design work (such as graphic design) that requires precise processing of the dotted surface, then you can’t enjoy it – at least, you can’t enjoy it at work.

The 499P9H1 is not the first 32-inch 49-inch display. Prior to it, other brands introduced a 32:9 49-inch display. But the previous monitors basically used Samsung’s 49-inch VA panel with a resolution of only 3840×1080. This resolution looks quite awkward on the huge and ultra-wide 49-inch display, except for the obvious graininess (points up to O.311mm): the picture is also “obese” because it stretches to the sides. . I personally feel that the visual experience is not very good. However, with this panel, Samsung has successfully led the old rival LG on the 49-inch panel for a whole year. Of course, after all, this is just a transitional expediency. As a result, Samsung also shipped a new 49-inch VA panel last year, increasing the resolution to 5120×1440. Compared to the standard 2k resolution of 2560×1440, the 5120×1440 doubles the width, which corresponds to a change from 16:9 to 32:9 width. Compared to Samsung’s previous generation of 49-inch panels, the dot pitch of the new panel has been greatly reduced to O.233mm, so the picture is much more delicate. At the same time, the picture will not appear too “obese”, more in line with everyone’s habits. Based on the 49-inch panel, only LG and Samsung are currently available, and the two have chosen the IPS (LG) and VA (Samsung) technologies. The Philips 499P9H1 should use Samsung’s latest 49-inch VA. panel.

In addition to ultra-precise resolution, the 499P9H1’s superior level of performance in other conventional indicators also results in excellent display quality. It has a standard contrast ratio of 3000:1 (smart contrast 80000000:1) and brightness of 450nit, which gives it VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification, also known as HDR400 certification (“screen in the display settings interface” This function can be found under the option and opened. Compared with the traditional SDR display, the HDR display can greatly enhance the display details of the bright and dark parts, so that the traditional SDR display does not expose the bright part of the screen or the dark part of the picture, making the picture closest to the human eye in the real world. See the scene. In short, as long as the eyes are not blind, it is easy to see the huge difference between HDR and SDR in reality. At the same time, more and more content (games or movies) has introduced HDR. Therefore, to buy a monitor today, HDR is definitely a must. It has a refresh rate of 60Hz and a response time of 5ms (gray to grayscale). Considering that this is not an e-sports display, I think it is completely acceptable. At the same time, it also supports adaptive synchronization technology, which can automatically synchronize when the frame rate is less than 60fps, to prevent the problem of unsmooth picture and other smooth, and thus get a better game experience.

I tested the 499P9H1 with the Spyder 5 Elite Color Corrector. It covers 100% of the sRGB color gamut and 86% of the Adobe RGB color gamut, and the Gamma curve almost exactly coincides with the ideal luminosity 2.2 curve, showing a pretty good color reproduction. The gray scale test curve shows that it is stable at 30% to 100% brightness, and is basically between 6750K and 6850K. The display is closest to D65f6500K at 70% to 80% brightness). The color uniformity and brightness uniformity of the 499P9H1 have a good performance. The maximum difference in color uniformity is only 2.4, and the brightness uniformity difference is only 9%. This is a pretty good level for an oversized, ultra-wide 49-inch display. In the color accuracy test of 12 colors, the average ΔE value was only 0.98, and the maximum ΔE value was only 2.74. It should be noted that when the ΔE value is between 1.6 and 3.2, the human eye can basically not distinguish the difference in color, and completely achieves the level of professional display.

In addition to accurate color reproduction, the 499P9H1 also has a very powerful utility. In terms of display interface, it provides a DP1.4 interface, an upstream USB with built-in DP AIt mode—C3.1 Gen 2 interface and two HDMI 2.0b interfaces. In addition, it also provides three downstream USB 3.1 interfaces and an upstream USB-B 3.1 interface (also known as square port USB), as well as a dry mega network interface.

The 499P9H1 supports MultiView multi-window technology and can support two display signals at the same time. By turning on the PBP function in the display interface of the display, the display signals from the two input sources can be displayed side by side on the display. You can also change the main input source and the secondary input source by selecting the “Interchange” function in the PBP option – there is actually no big difference, more like changing the left and right position of the picture. Of course, you also need to adjust the resolution to 2560×1440 on both hosts. After doing this, the 499P9H1 will display the same effect as the two 25-inch monitors. You will then need to call the same color profile on both hosts separately. Otherwise, it may happen that one of the display colors is not normal.

Now that the dual-screen input is implemented, the next pain point is obvious. We still need to access two sets of mouse and keyboard on the two hosts. Not only is the desktop space still tight, but it is also easy to confuse the corresponding mouse and keyboard. Philips even considered this pain point for everyone and gave a solution. The 499P9H1 supports the MultiClient function. By integrating the KVM switch in the display, you can operate two hosts simultaneously through a single set of keyboard and mouse. This function is not complicated to implement. First, you need to connect two upstream USB interfaces (USB Tvpe-C and USBTvpe-B) to two PCs, and then connect the mouse and keyboard to the downlink USB interface on the display. In the “USB Settings” – “KVM” option of the display settings menu, you can switch the host currently controlled by the mouse and keyboard. Unfortunately, the KVM feature of the 499P9H1 is still relatively basic. Even if Philips actually provides a remote control, it is not too convenient for the user to enter the display menu of the display to make changes. Through the “OSD Settings” – “User Key” in the display settings menu, we can customize the display’s USER button to KVM switching function, providing a relatively streamlined method. However, if you can provide a shortcut button on the remote control: or develop a software, it is more convenient to switch directly on the mouse and keyboard. In general, with the MultiView and MultiClient functions, users can control two hosts simultaneously with a single 499P9H1 and a set of mouse and keyboard, and save a lot of desktop space, which is very practical.

The 49-inch 499P9H1 is undoubtedly a behemoth, with a weight of 11kg without a base. It is not easy for designers to make the base support such a huge weight, reduce the occupation of the desktop space, and have an aesthetic effect. In the end, the designer designed the base as the current hollow structure, made of metal. The cushioning back bracket is attached to the base to form a three-dimensional “convex” shape. The weight of this bracket itself has reached 4. 3kg, the up and down lifting range is 130mm, the left and right rotation angle is +20° and the front and rear tilting angle is -5~10°. For a 49-inch behemoth, the adjustment range of this bracket is quite loose. Press the pop-up switch on the top of the monitor and there’s a hidden pop-up camera that supports WindOWS Hello facial recognition – but that’s it. After all, this camera is only 2 million pixels, and it is too shabby to use it for video conversation today. Having said that, I think everyone must be very concerned about what is going on with this behemoth? A broad view is my first feeling. As I said before, it is impossible to see the whole picture of the monitor at a glance. It can be seen that 2/3 is already in the sky. Needless to say, everyone knows that this display is very suitable for multi-window side-by-side applications, such as securities finance, table comparison and so on. Of course, for daily multitasking operations, the 499P9H1 is also quite suitable. If you are at home, you can put a bunch of windows on each corner of the screen, and you don’t have to switch back and forth between the backgrounds. If you are in the office, you can open more PPT or something, creating an illusion of serious work. The chat window, or cut to the background. Fineness is my second feeling, even with Word and Excel, the advantages of high resolution can be easily seen. I will be Windows The zoom adjustment of 10 in 12 is a good way to balance the font size and display detail. Of course, I strongly recommend that you lower the brightness slightly, otherwise it will feel glare for a long time. As for the game, you need to analyze the specific situation. First of all, not all games support a 32:9 super wide ratio. For example, the latest “Wolf: Shadow of the Second Degree”, although supported on the surface, only has a picture in the middle, and both sides are still black. Secondly, even games like World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy X, and Tomb Raider: Shadow, which offer ultra-wide resolution, have different feelings. Unless you have a huge desktop space, or there are other ways to move the mouse and mouse backwards by 30cm, you will find that you need to frequently slap the sides to see the edges of the screen – especially in the default Some important menus appear frequently when placed on the edge. Believe me, this is not a very good experience, and soon you will feel dizzy or neck pain. However, if you can try to move the mouse back to the right distance: or the game supports the handle, you can lean in the seat in an optimal position. The 499P9H1 game experience is not too good. Compared to the usual, players can see a wider field of view, can simultaneously see the movement of the enemy on both sides, no longer need to adjust the field of view back and forth as before. Coupled with HDR and its excellent display, it makes people feel like enjoying a feast of eyes. There is no doubt that you need a graphics card with enough grades. Although the 5120×1440 resolution does not have the 4k (3840×2160) resolution requirement for the graphics card, since you have purchased the monitor with a big blood, it is not excessive to get at least one RTX on the graphics card.

The 49-inch, 32:9 ratio 499P9H1 has the widest field of view to date, as well as outstanding performance with high resolution and excellent panel quality, especially for industrial applications that frequently require multi-window operation. Coupled with MultiView multi-window technology and MultiClient function, it can also meet the needs of two host users at the same time. Although the game is not its mainstay, the 499P9H1 does bring a different visual experience. Because of this, its price is as high as 12,999 yuan, but it is worth the money.
