Black disk SSD welcomes upgrade WD BLACK SN750 NVMe SSD

I don’t know if you remember the WD Black NVMe SSD that we tested last year? I am still remembering this product. – The reason is that it only needs one-sided double-particles to achieve 1TB capacity, which was the leading product at that time: on the other hand, its excellent read and write performance also left a deep impression. Almost a year has passed, WD has also launched the new Black series, which is the WD BLACK SN750 NVMe SSD (hereinafter referred to as SN750). Its main feature is to further increase storage density and provide up to 2TB of capacity in single-sided M.2 specifications.

For M.2 SSDs, the difficulty of increasing storage capacity is not that simple. After all, the M.22280’s external dimensions are only 80mmx22mm. Except for the space of the main control chip and the circuit trace, in fact, M.22280 can only put down 2 NAND particles on one side. At the same time, the package size of NAND particles is also an industry standard and is unlikely to change at will. In this case, the internal stacking of NAND particles to increase the storage density is inevitably the only way out. Since entering the flash memory industry, WD has been a leader in this area. In addition to last year’s 96-layer 3D NAND particles, 128-layer 3D NAND particles are said to be coming soon. Of course, this cutting-edge technology can’t be mass-produced in a short time.

The SN750 is available in multiple capacities, including 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB. Unfortunately, the sample in my hand is a 1TB model, not a top 2TB version. Therefore, I don’t know the single-sided 2TB king this time. By tearing off the label covering the surface of the SN750, you can see that all the components are distributed on one side of the SSD, including two NAND particles, SSD master and DRAM cache. The NAND pellet is numbered SanDisk 05560 512G and is a 64-layer stacked BiCS 3D TLC pellet from SanDisk with a single capacity of up to 512GB. Like the previous generation BLACK NVMe SSD, the SN750’s main control is also from its own SanDisk, in order to achieve a better match with its own four-channel NAND particles. The SanDisk 20-82-007011 master supports the PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 channel and NVMe protocol, which provides up to 515,000 random reads and up to 560000 random write IOPs.

In the previous generation of Black NVMe SSDs, WD limited the single-sided design for NVMe’s general high heat, while the optimized layout was used on the other hand. By placing the SSD controller in the center, NAND particles are distributed on both sides of the controller, minimizing the length of the wiring and thus reducing heat generation. The SN750 continues this design approach, and at the same time it adds additional auxiliary cooling. In addition to the 256GB version, other capacity versions have a model with a heat sink. EKWB, a well-known thermal solution provider, has partnered with WD to design a simple heat sink. According to the official announcement, it is possible to take away the heat of the SSD more quickly, so that the SSD can be read and written at full speed for a longer period of time. This will have to be confirmed after waiting for the corresponding sample. However, it is certain that the version with the heat sink is probably not used in the notebook. After all, the thickness of the entire SSD has reached 8.1mm after the heat sink, which is much thicker than the normal version of 2.38mm.

I set the SN750 to be tested from the disk in a game book configured for the Core i7-8750H+GeForceRTX 2070. The results of the test are very good. In the C rvstAIDiskMark 6 test, its sequential read and write performance is up to 3495.7MB / s and 3017.1MB / s respectively. This score is not far from WD’s official 3470MB/s and 3000MB/s. Compared with the previous generation of BlackNVMe SSD, the write performance of the SN750 has been improved. At the same time, the SN750 also offers a five-year limited warranty, and the 1TB model has a durability of up to 600TBW. The starting price of the SN750 is much cheaper than before. The price of 1TB is 1999 yuan (the previous generation 1TB first price is 2499 yuan), it is worth starting. Of course, if you want to be in one step, you can choose to wait for two days. The 2TB version is said to be on the road.
